President Donald Trump has stated the US Navy destroyed an Iranian drone within the Strait of Hormuz.
He mentioned the United States Boxer amphibious assault ship “took defensive motion” on Thursday after the drone got here within about 1,000 yards (914m) of the vessel.
Iran mentioned it had no details about losing a drone. In June, Iran downed a US military drone within the area.
The US have blamed Iran for attacks on tankers since May in the world’s key shipping area. Tehran denies all of the accusations.
The latest incidents have triggered fears of military conflict within the area.
Talking on the White House, he mentioned: “I wish to apprise everyone of an incident within the Strait of Hormuz today involving USS Boxer, a navy amphibious assault ship.
“The Boxer took defensive motion against an Iranian drone which had closed into a really, very close to distance, approximately 1,000 yards, ignoring multiple calls to stand down and was threatening the protection of the ship and the ship’s crew. The drone was immediately destroyed.
“This is the most recent of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran in opposition to vessels working in international waters. The US reserves the right to defend our personnel, facilities, and interests.”
A defence division official quoted by the New York Times mentioned the drone had been introduced down utilizing electronic jamming equipment.
Washington earlier mentioned Iran must immediately release the tanker it stated it had seized.
Iran’s state media quoted Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as saying the vessel had been smuggling a million liters (220,000 gallons) of fuel.
The state media later printed footage of Iranian speedboats circling around the Panamanian-flagged Riah tanker.
The tanker was seized south of Iran’s Larak Island, Iran stated.
