Military Chief Says China Is the Major Challenge To US

China will remain the “major challenge” to the USA military for as long as a century, warned President Trump’s nominee for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Thursday.

China had learned from watching the United States go to war within the Middle East and was utilizing those lessons to advance the development of its own military, stated present Military Chief of Employees General Mark Milley at his affirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Providers Committee.

“China went to school on us,” Milley stated, responding to a question from Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia.

“They watched us very intently in the First Gulf War, the Second Gulf War. They watched our capabilities. And in many some ways, they’ve mimicked these, and they have adopted many of the doctrines and organizations.”

Milley was fielding questions on how he would operate as the President’s principal military adviser and deal with the pressure of delivering his own opinions within the Oval Office.

If confirmed, he’ll succeed outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Dunford, to become the highest-ranking military officer in the US and principal military adviser to the President. This transformation would come at a time when the Donald Trump administration faces quite a lot of geopolitical challenges, including the continued growth of Chinese military power, as seen in areas such as the South China Sea.

Mark Milley, who was tapped by Trump to be next chairman of the Joint Chiefs last December, has commanded items with the 10th Mountain Division and the 101st Airborne and served multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After turning into chief of staff of the Military in 2015, Milley helped oversee the military’s transition away from large-scale counterinsurgency campaigns in locations like Iraq and Afghanistan, focusing instead on near-peer challenges from Russia and China.
